Meeting House Preschool, a non-denominational school in
Old Town Alexandria, serves students ages two through five in a half-day
program (9 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.). We believe that children learn best through play,
using the emergent curriculum in which teachers explore the student's specific interests
and skill levels to create a meaningful learning environment. At Meeting House, we put into
practice the belief that learning isn't just repeating what someone says; it requires
active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work. In a cooperative spirit, we welcome parents to play an active role in their children's education, and, while not required, parents are always welcome in the classroom.
As part of our school, parents play a vital role in the child's classroom experience. We recognize that parents are a child's
first teachers and are excited to see how we can support your
child's development and encourage you on your parenting journey.
Communication between our staff and parents is critical to
providing an effective early childhood program. In turn, we see a spirit of altruism and social concern grow as the children interact with one another, their teachers, families, and the world.
When we work as a team, children strengthen the foundation for an emotionally safe and secure atmosphere in which to grow.
Each teacher works with parents in a different capacity, given the
age of their students. Meeting House supports children by providing space, opportunity, and materials that stretch them developmentally. We ensure that each child has the time to choose their play activity,
which allows them the freedom to become further engaged.
Play is fun and pays big dividends to eager learners.
An instilled sense of community helps children understand their place in the larger world, develop social and cognitive skills, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences. By spending time with school friends and experiencing an individualized education model, a secure sense of belonging is established in our students.
As students learn about the world around them, they develop
social awareness and foster interconnectedness with others.
Our committed teachers and active Board of Directors help create
this deep sense of community among the students and families
and expand that sense of community outside our school walls.
Meeting House Preschool is a ministry of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House. In response to the biblical admonition to care for children, Meeting House provides a program in which the protection of children's rights is crucial. Believing that each child is unique, the preschool offers a loving environment where children can participate in their learning and development. MHCP advocates for the welfare of children and families in the Alexandria area and welcomes children
of all levels of ability and economic means to its program.
Meeting House recognizes parents' essential role in the education of their children. Therefore we intentionally solicit the active support of parents, both in and out of the classroom. Teachers and parents cooperate in providing a strong, developmentally appropriate education in which children can freely explore new discoveries.
Meeting House emphasizes love, fairness, and concern for all the children in its program, regardless of race, economic status, or religion. Respecting the God-given worth of all children, Meeting House establishes an environment that seeks to stimulate and expand their social, emotional, intellectual, physical, cultural, religious, and moral development. Meeting House admits students of any race, color, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, gender, or disability to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the preschool. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, or other school-sponsored programs.
We look forward to talking with you and answering any questions you have about
